RE: Becoming a Business Analyst

From: Geri Schneider Winters

Dear Friend,

I get a lot of emails, blog posts, and fan page posts from people who want to be a Business Analyst. You have been working for a few or many years in related jobs and really want to be a Business Analyst. You have asked me where to find training on the BA role. There may be good training available, but I do not know the people offering it, so I did not feel I could recommend it.

To solve this problem, I wrote a class for you! And I am really excited to be able to offer this class because I want to help you in your goal of becoming a BA.

I offer this class periodically as an IIBA certified instructor led class. Because many of you want this class at other times, I am making a self-study version available.

Imagine it is late summer and you are starting a new Business Analyst position. You are relaxed and confident, because you know just what to do. You make a good impression on your new boss, because right away you identify the most important tasks and start to work on them immediately.

"On my second interview I took a test - three different problems. Thank goodness for your class!"

"One, I had to write a use case for a specific situation, another was a UI mock-up (I had total confidence there), and third, questions to ask a project sponsor for a given request. They liked my answers."

"I don't believe that I told you that I took this job! They made me an offer and I decided to take the plunge."

Gail Gammel

That is what I want to help you achieve through this class - the skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence for your new position.

Benefits You Get From This Course

Topics We Will Cover

Geri's Background and Experience

I realize some of you do not know me. I have been in the software industry for over 20 years in a wide variety of roles. I alternate over the years between working on project teams, consulting, coaching, and training. I work as a BA, mentor and train BA's, and hire BA's for project teams. You can find out a lot about me through an online search, and I encourage you to do so. I do have a lot of experience, but even more important are the results my clients get from my work:

"Geri not only has the broad skill set, the deep knowledge of all aspects of software development and requirements, but she also combines these with a rare gift for communication with both business and highly technical audiences."

Andrew Midkiff

You may be thinking that it is good that I have a lot of experience and am good at my job, but can I teach?

"Geri's OOA/OOD/Rose class is by unanimous acclamation the best training experience we have ever had."

"Her practical tool-based knowledge is flawless, exceeded only by the depth and breadth of her theoretical understanding and insight. A great communicator to boot!"

Douglas Nash

My students say this about my training:

"This is the best class I have ever taken, including undergraduate and professional classes."

"You provided very thorough materials including notes, examples, and templates, and a large amount of supplemental material as well."

Raj Rajakumar

"I found your class immensely helpful."

"The recordings were great. We are going to review what you taught about Use Cases among the other BA's in my department. Thanks for your time and your perspective!"

Evan Wise

How does the Self-Study format work?

When you register for the class, you will be given immediate access to a member area. Here you will find video and audio recordings from the live class, along with class notes, examples, and templates. Comment sections appear throughout the site, where you can post questions, which I review and answer online.

There are also homework assignments for you to complete in your environment. I have devised some creative ways for you to practice the skills you need, even with family and friends. These are things that will not annoy them either. They will probably enjoy helping you with this homework! You can post your homework in the member area and I will review it for you.

Like any other class, you are registering for personal access to the class. All materials are for your personal use. You may not share them with others or use them to teach a class. If you know other people interested in taking the class, give them the link to this page!

Interact through Comments on Each Page

There are three differences between the instructor led class and the self-study class. The self-study class:

If you take the instructor led version of the class, you will get IIBA credit when you apply for IIBA certification. If you take the self-study version of the class, on your application for IIBA certification, you have to list the class as a self-study class and request that it be evaluated for credit. You will still get credit for the class, just through a different process.

Get the Most from the Class

You get the most out of the class when you put in time regularly to listen to the material, practice the exercises, ask questions, and interact with others in the member area.

Membership

When you purchase the class, you get 4 months of access to the member site for the class. This is where you find all the course materials and where you interact with your instructor and other students. You can access all the material online or download it to your own system for your personal use.

Some of you will want more than 4 months access to instructor time. So after 4 months, you will automatically be entered into a recurring membership at $27 per month. (I was not going to make this automatic, but it was the only way I could find to connect the ongoing membership to the initial purchase. I think I need to send a new user story to some software vendors!)

This recurring membership gives you continued access to your instructor and other students. If you do not want the recurring membership, you can cancel the recurring feature at any time before the end of the first 4 months. (No matter when you cancel, you will get the first 4 months access as part of your initial purchase.) I have set up an automatic email to remind you about the recurring membership before the end of your 4 months membership, so you will not be surprised by an unexpected charge, and there is a prominant link on the membership site to a page to cancel the recurring membership.

Still Not Sure?

Listen to my free pre-training classes. You get some great information, get to know me, and see if you like working with a pre-recorded format.
